In our works we are interested to underline and bring awareness to the relation between natural and artifcial, industry and landscape as in the serie Bu Colics. Trowing a diferent light on unpleasant things like dumps, garbage bags, abandoned and ruined monuments, shelters made of asbestos, radio aerials and polluted environments, change our perception of the everyday life, deconstructing and annihilating the common idea of Nature as a pure, idealized and reassuring entity. In the Pacifc Ocean there is an area called “Garbage patch”. It is a “dump island” formed at the beginning of the 1950s by the North Pacifc Subtropical Gyre, an oceanic tide endowed by a particular hourly spiral movement. At the center of this tide spiral it accumulates a huge amount of refuse from all over the seas, mainly plastics and rubble, to form an enormous island or “cloud”. This giant expanse of debris – in fact the world’s largest rubbish dump – is held in place by swirling underwater currents. This drifing “soup” stretches from around 800 Km of the Californian coast, across the northern Pacifc, passing the Hawaii and almost reaching Japan’s coasts. This “plastic soup” of waste foating in the Pacifc Ocean is growing day by day at an alarming rate and according to many scientists it covers now an area twice the size of the continental United States. By choosing this setting – the garbage patch – we are interested in the subject of refuse as the consequence of a certain lifestyle and in its connotation as something removed from its original context, becoming the dump a metaphor and a sort of symbolic place of the removal. Everything connected with commodity has an aura of attraction and creates an economy founded upon the seduction of the object, that provokes desire and desire of possession. Tough commodity, in the moment in which it is bought, used and consumed, loses inch by inch its power of appeal, up to the point it is discarded, and we stop looking at it as part of our life. The “Looking for the Island” project encompasses a video about this synthetic environment in the Pacifc Ocean. The perception people have about this place is of an island of plastic garbage that you could almost walk on. Tough, it is not really like this. Sunlight and waves break the plastic into fragments, fragments that resemble food for marine animals becoming a Biotic mix. It is almost like a confetti plastic soup: many diferent small pieces of plastic, as if you emptied out one of those kaleidoscope telescopes…..
With this project we are interested in the idea of undertaking a physical and metaphoric journey to explore and deliver a vision of our experience, rediscovering and confronting all the objects that we no longer desire to and from which we have freed ourselves.
We will produce an underwater video on the movement of these myriad of fragments of lost
memory, representing our collective refuse of satisfed desire. A camera will slowly foat in the fuid element; shortening and lengthening the time of the shot; documenting our passing, kind of digging in the magma of memory in the history of our century. The video will be a sort of evolution of our previous work “Against Te tide”, a long shot of a slow movement of myriad of small coloured confetti, a very vivid and coloured winning image presented in ironic contrast with the reality of the polluting matter. As if it were one of thoseglitter/snow
globes that are sold in tourist shops, where you shake it
to mix the glitter with the water and then you remain hypnotized looking as it sinks to the bottom little by little. For the “Garbage patch” video we are going to collaborate with a professional underwater flming cameraman and to work not only with the classic underwater
camera but rather also with a television camera bar-cam (up to 4 ms. without entering water) and to monitor directly from above the surface of the water. As in all other prevoius projects, we would like to develop an intriguing imaginary and capture the gaze of the spectator, rendering fascinating and glamorous all the objects that we have discarded but that now silently re-enter our food chain and our bodies. The concept of the journey and the discovery of this part of the world is for us a very important aspect of the work, we also expect to encounter objects still not deteriorated and to flm and photograph through the lights and the techniques traditionally used for still life advertising shots. Our project is to undertake a trip toward this area, that even the most modern technology fails to identify. This is due to the sea of rubbish being translucent and lying just below the water’s surface, being therefore not detectable in satellite photographs “You only see it from the bows of ships….,” The video will be the journey to an unknown faraway place, a wide part of Ocean that has never been visited and only few have crossed. A post-modern Odyssey towards the greatest removal of
our western culture, a long trip to re-colonize our imaginary and to discover the product of the
entropy of our society, our way of life, our food delivery system.
